Next Stop – Horta – by Harmon Shragge

Well I guess there is no turning back now…160 miles to go.

Every morning, I wake up terrified. Absolutely scared out of my mind that I will not have anything to report on that next day’s blog. Very little scares me out here. With Randall nearby, storms and hurricanes are mere inconveniences. But delivering a blog post…. that scares me. In fact Randall will not let me turn in until I’ve a blog to post.

It is not like I go to bed (which I do three times per day) knowing what will happen the next day. So like every other day, this morning I awakened with one eye open, knowing that this will be a calm and uneventful day (not much to report on – which stressed me). Which it was until Randall lost his hat, but that is another story. So, here before you is what a quiet, placid day looks like:

First up, it was time to turn the page, literally in our ships’s log. To those of you with less sea days under you, the log is a record of the ships journey, including navigational data, weather conditions and other significant events. On Mōli, like many ships, it is updated every two hours by whomever is on watch.

Starting on the left (picture above) is a column for the date, and then the time, followed by our latitude and then longitude, and then it is our COG (course over ground) over our boat speed, followed by True Wind Direction over our True Wind Speed, the barometer reading, sea state, visual weather conditions, what sails are up and if they re reefed or not. On the page to the right, we then enter milage traveled and answer a host of questions pertaining to the battery and our electrical system, and then engine information like temperature and oil pressure and last a line for general comments.

One page will last almost four days. Note that we have been keeping this log since the beginning of our journey. It has been fun to follow the barometric pressure from the low (the mid 900’s if I remember correctly) to the high (maybe today of 1032.6?). But every four days, Randall must create a brand new bespoke log page. He takes out the ruler, takes his measurements and makes his calculations and creates a brand new page.

Today we noticed that the color of the water has changed. One week ago it was a marine green. Over the last several days, it has transitioned from a mix of blue and green, to just blue, and today to beautiful aquamarine.

What else does one do on a calm day like today? Work out!

I am often asked the question, “Do you gain or lose weight on your journey’s?”. The answer is that I typically return home around the same weight, but I lose a lot of muscle. My coach/trainer BARCLAY gets very upset when I return home sans all of those muscles that he and I work so hard to build. So this trip, at his behest, I brought a couple of workout tools. More on this later, but I try to do some muscle building once a day.

Randall relaxed today in his own way. Upper Left, he is reading an Alaskan-based action novel while enjoying a Diet Pepsi. Mōlis Upper Right is also thirsty, so he gives her her own drink of choice, 15-40 motor oil.

In honor of all of my Swedish friends and family for Midsummer, I made a vegetarian version of pea soup for dinner. Quite tasty.

And now my day is done and I will brush my teeth and go to sleep. It is 6:48 PM ship time, and I will awaken at 9:50 to do my 10:00 to 2:00 AM watch. See you in Horta.
