Leg 4, Blog 8, December 31, 2025, Latitude 61 S
Randall and I interrupt your New Years festivities to say hello!!

We are heading south in the Southern Ocean traveling Drake Passage to the Antarctic Peninsula.

Our goal is to reach the Melchior Islands within two days.

Above: On our way down, we passed, and then did a partial rounding of Cape Horn. Congratulations to us!! Does that count??!! If not, we will have to hit it on our way back. Luckily for us, the wind was down for the moment and we could approach this famous, dreaded land mass.

Cape Horn is special due to its infamous reputation as a treacherous maritime landmark, marking the wild convergence of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans at the tip of South America, characterized by extreme winds (Roaring Forties/Furious Fifties), massive waves, strong currents, and a history of shipwrecks, making it a legendary challenge for sailors and a vital historical trade route before the Panama Canal.

This was Randall’s third time around the Cape and my first. Just awesome.
As we passed the Cape and headed south, the sailing has been good – plenty of wind to keep us moving (in the 10 to 25 knot range), but not too much to blow us out.
Lots of birds following us…. prions, white chinned petrels and a wandering albatross or two.

With any luck, we will see you all in the Antarctic Peninsula. Happy New Year from Randall and Harmon. Here we are enjoying our new year meal. Thank you to all our readers, our wives, our friends and family. We love you all!! To end, I will quote my favorite Three Dog Night song:
“Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea, Joy to you and me!”
